Introduction

Texas Tech University is a public research university in Lubbock, Texas. Established on February 10, 1923, and called until 1969 Texas Technological College, it is the flagship institution of the four-institution Texas Tech University System. The university’s student enrollment is the seventh-largest in Texas as of fall 2019. As of Fall 2018, Texas Tech’s alumni lead all of academia in medium and large sized companies who hire the most alumni.

Texas Tech’s Postseason History

Texas Tech has made 15 bowl appearances in its history, which dates back to 1937. The Red Raiders have a 7-8 record in bowl games. Their last bowl appearance was in 2016 when they beat South Florida in the Birmingham Bowl.

Texas Tech’s first bowl game

Texas Tech’s first bowl game was the 1936 Cotton Bowl Classic, where the Red Raiders defeated Baylor, 26-14. This was the first of four Cotton Bowl appearances for Texas Tech. The Red Raiders’ next bowl game was the 1937 Sun Bowl, where they lost to Catholic University, 28-26. Texas Tech did not make another bowl appearance until the 1952 Gator Bowl, where they defeated Auburn, 13-9. The Red Raiders’ most recent Cotton Bowl appearance was in 2013, when they lost to Missouri, 41-31.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders most recently appeared in the Birmingham Bowl in 2019, where they defeated the Minnesota Golden Gophers. This was Texas Tech’s first appearance in the Birmingham Bowl, and their first bowl win since 2017. The Red Raiders have appeared in a total of 35 bowl games in their history, compiling a record of 17-18.

Texas Tech is currently 5-6 and must win their last game of the season against Baylor in order to become bowl eligible. They are 1-5 in their last six games and their only win came against a struggling Kansas team.

Conclusion

From the research that was done, it appears that as of right now, Texas Tech is not bowl eligible for any post-season bowl games. In order to be eligible, a team must have at least six wins. Texas Tech only has five wins at this time. They would need to win their last game in order to be eligible for a bowl game.
