History
Texas Tech football began in 1925 with a 34–0 win over Southwestern Presbyterian. The team competed as an independent until 1929 when it joined the Border Conference. From 1936 to 1956, the Red Raiders were led by head coach Deke Brackett. During his time at Texas Tech, he compiled a 55–27–7 record, won fourBorder Conference titles, and had one undefeated season in 1939 when the team went 11–0. Jack Curtice took over as head coach of the Red Raiders from Brackett in 1957. He led the team for two seasons, compiling a record of 11–10–1. A&M head football coach Jim Myers hired Curtice to replace Warren B. Woodson, who resigned after eight seasons with A&M.
Rivalries
The Red Raiders have several longstanding rivalries, the most notable of which is with the Longhorns of the University of Texas. The winner of this annual game receives the Chancellor’s Spurs, which are tradition-ally given to a school by one of its chancellor’s in recognition of that school’s superior equestrian program. There is also a Commissioner’s Trophy that is awarded to the winner; however, this trophy is relatively new, having only been awarded since 2004. The Red Raiders also have a longstanding rivalry with the Oklahoma Sooners which began in 1928 and was fueled by former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach’s outspoken nature.
The most recent addition to the Red Raiders’ rivalry list is with the TCU Horned Frogs. This rivalry was originally thought to be one-sided as TCU joined the Big 12 Conference and won their first meeting 41-38. However, after back-to-back loses by TCU in 2011 and 2012 by a combined score of 118-34, this rivalry has potential to heat up in years to come.
