HVAC Basics

HVAC technicians are responsible for installing, servicing, and repairing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. They work in a variety of settings, including homes, schools, hospitals, and office buildings. HVAC technicians typically have a high school diploma or equivalent and receive on-the-job training. Some states require HVAC technicians to be licensed.

What is an HVAC system?

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) is the technology of indoor and vehicular environmental comfort. Its goal is to provide thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air quality. HVAC system design is a subdiscipline of mechanical engineering, based on the principles of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer. “Refrigeration” is sometimes added to the field’s abbreviation, as HVAC&R or HVACR or “ventilation” is dropped, as in HACR (as in the designation of HACR-rated circuit breakers).

HVAC is important in the design of medium to large industrial and office buildings such as skyscrapers and in marine environments such as aquariums, where safe and healthy building conditions are regulated with respect to temperature and humidity, using fresh air from outdoors.

How do HVAC systems work?

HVAC is an acronym that stands for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. An HVAC system controls the temperature, humidity, and overall air quality of a space to provide for optimal occupant comfort.

A typical HVAC system is made up of several pieces of equipment that work together to heat or cool a space. The three main components are a furnace or boiler (the heating element), an air conditioner (the cooling element), and a ductwork system (to distribute the conditioned air throughout the house).

In a typical forced-air system, the furnace or boiler heats air, which is then pulled through a series of ducts by a powerful fan. The air is then pushed through registers (vents) into the rooms of the house where it is needed.

The air conditioner works similarly to the furnace, but in reverse. It pulls warm air from the house and passes it through a cooling coil. This coil turns the warm air into cold air, which is then distributed throughout the house via the ductwork system.

An HVAC system also contains a thermostat, which is used to control the temperature of the space. Thermostats can be manual or automatic. With an automatic thermostat, you set the desired temperature for the space and the HVAC system will turn on or off as needed to maintain that temperature.

HVAC systems are used in both residential and commercial buildings to provide for comfortable indoor temperatures year-round.

The Role of an HVAC Technician

An HVAC technician installs, maintains, and repairs heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. They also may install or service other environmental control systems, such as humidifiers and dehumidifiers. Many HVAC technicians start their careers by completing a technical training program at a community college or trade school. Some technicians may also choose to earn a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.

Installing HVAC systems

An HVAC technician not only installs and maintains heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, but also designs new systems for both residential and commercial construction projects. An HVAC system ensures that a building or home maintains comfortable indoor temperatures while also providing fresh air and removing pollutants.

As an HVAC technician, your job duties will include measuring the space that needs to be cooled or heated, choosing the right size and type of equipment, installing the system according to local building codes, testing the system to make sure it’s working properly, and performing regular maintenance to keep the system running efficiently. You may also be responsible for repairing existing systems when they break down.

To become an HVAC technician, you will need to complete a training program at a trade school or community college. Many programs last two years or less, and will prepare you for your state’s licensing exam. Some states require HVAC technicians to be licensed, while others do not. Once you have your license, you can begin seeking employment with an HVAC contractor or company.

Maintaining HVAC systems

An HVAC technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Heating systems are used to maintain comfortable temperatures in buildings, while ventilation systems remove contaminated air and circulate fresh air. Air conditioning systems cool and humidify the air.

HVAC technicians typically work in factories, office buildings or residences. They may be employed by a company that specializes in HVAC services, or they may be self-employed.

HVAC technicians use a variety of tools to do their job, including screwdrivers, levels, insulation testers and soldering irons. They also use computerized equipment to diagnose problems with HVAC systems.

HVAC technicians must have a good understanding of how HVAC systems work in order to properly install, maintain and repair them. They also need to be able to read blueprints and follow instructions from manufacturers.

Repairing HVAC systems

An HVAC technician is responsible for installing, repairing and maintaining heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

HVAC technicians typically start their careers by completing a formal education program at a technical school or community college. After completing their training, they must obtain a license from the state in which they plan to work. Once licensed, they can find employment with a variety of employers, including HVAC contractors, building managers and facility maintenance departments.

The job duties of an HVAC technician vary depending on their employer and the specific needs of their customers or clients. In general, however, their daily tasks may include:

-Inspecting HVAC systems to identify problems
-Testing HVAC systems to ensure they are operating properly
-Installing new HVAC systems or components
-Repairing existing HVAC systems or components
-Performing preventive maintenance on HVAC systems

HVAC Certification and Training

HVAC technicians install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. They work in a variety of settings, including residences, commercial businesses, and industrial facilities. Many HVAC technicians are certified by professional organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Some states require HVAC technicians to be licensed. Many HVAC technicians complete formal training programs at trade schools or community colleges.

HVAC certification programs

HVAC certification programs train individuals to work in the HVAC industry. Programs typically last between six and twelve months and cover topics such as refrigeration, air conditioning, and ventilation. Upon completion of an HVAC certification program, individuals are often eligible to take the EPA’s certification exam to become certified HVAC technicians.

HVAC training programs

HVAC training programs typically last between 6 and 12 months, although some may last up to two years. During your training, you’ll likely study math, blueprint reading, science, safety and customer service. Many programs include an internship, during which you’ll work with experienced HVAC technicians.
