History
Lubbock, Texas was founded in 1876. It was named after Thomas S. Lubbock, a Confederate Colonel in the Texas Civil War. The city rapidly grew in the early 1900s due to the booming cotton industry. Lubbock is sometimes called “the Hub City” due to its prominence as a regional center for entertainment, education, and healthcare. The city is also home to Texas Tech University, which has a large impact on the city’s economy.

As of the census of 2010, there were 229,573 people, 70,965 households, and 33,651 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,840.3 people per square mile (710.7/km2). There were 80,061 housing units at an average density of 634.9 per square mile (244.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 63.23% White, 12.72% African American, 0.72% Native American, 4.35% Asian (1.3% Indian, 0.7% Vietnamese, 0.5% Chinese, 0.4% Pakistani), 0.12% Pacific Islander, 14.33% from other races (8.8% from Latin America), and 4.01% from two or more races
There were 70,965 households out of which 26.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them in the city, 36.8% were married couples living together

The 1930s saw continued growth, including the addition of a medical school, and the university began to gain a reputation as a research institution. In the 1960s and 1970s, Texas Tech underwent a period of significant reform, including the creation of a Faculty Senate and the addition of new academic programs. The 1980s and 1990s were marked by further growth, including the addition of severalnew colleges and schools. Today, Texas Tech is a comprehensive research university with an enrollment of over 36,000 students. The university offers over 150 undergraduate majors, over 100 graduate programs, and 15 professional schools.
